Q&A With Our Knitting Supplier
Didn't you hear, knitting is in!
Some accessories look great but serve little purpose other than that, but anything from our knitting supplier is beautifully made and always practical. From their fun and colourful hats that look like your favourite animal or cartoon character, to bags and baby clothes, they create products for everyone.
As Canadians, we can appreciate a nice warm hat or sweater so we’re also excited to stop in and chat with Aew, the owner, and see what they’ve created since our last visit. Within the Chatuchak Weekend Market, it’s easy to spot Aew’sshop. There are vibrant coloured products hanging everywhere, including: hats, bags and clothes. Knitting is a very useful skill that a lot of people take up as a past time. They usually make a simple scarf or blanket, nothing too complicated. But others, like Aew, take to it easily and are able to create more complicated pieces.
OWB: Who taught you how to make your products?
I studied by myself, but there is a production factory to help you learn as well during the work. In the design, I started by myself, experimented by myself, and continued to study.
OWB: Where do you find your inspiration?
Inspiration came from following the fashion that was in the cartoon culture at that time. According to the trend at that time..
OWB: What’s your favourite product?
Every work is done through an idea. I go through thinking and intention to produce. Every piece has a different value. I like and take pride in all the work I do.
OWB: What are the challenges you’ve faced in the past year?
The market was closed. Most of the foreign customers who were customers disappeared because of the epidemic problem.
OWB: What would you like the people who buy your products to know?
Every product is made with love. From the design stage all the way to the production that is made entirely by hand.
OWB: What brings you joy and happiness?
I have been doing this job for a long time. Until it's part of myself, I love, bond and be proud. And also have a job that I love, meet people, talk to many people.
Like Aew, part of our job that we love is meeting and talking to all of these artisans. We appreciate being able to hear their stories and learn about their craft. With the Chatuchak Weekend Market being closed in 2022 due to the pandemic, she’s excited to see that people are coming back out now that it’s open again. The next time you’re wandering through One World Bazaar, keep an eye out for pieces from Aew! It’ll be hard to miss the colourful hats hanging in our clothing section. There might even be one themed after your (or your child’s) favourite cartoon character! .
